In Holy Matrimony - Kwani Povi Winder
How can I possibly thank this incredible woman!
This entire creation was a dream long before the design ever became a reality. Each piece was painstakingly created with every detail I had in mind. The "Tableta" headpiece was hand cut, painted, and the embellishments were crafted in my tiny jewelry studio in my shed - 30 to 40 yards of fabric covered my tables and floors as I cut and patterned pieces in hopes a dress would find life on a dress form. After many hours of work, my first Indigenous Haute Couture piece was done.
It was when I came to know Kwani at the Heard Museum show in Phoenix, Arizona, this dress - that had never been worn found the woman who was to bring it to life. Due to the sensitive ceremonial pieces, it was very important to me as the artist to ensure the woman wearing it was from Santa Clara Pueblo................the Creator's will was definitely working. When Kwani came for the fitting, it was simply magical! It fit her perfectly! I could not have been anymore blessed than when Kwani Povi Winder came into my life, I truly honor this woman.
Kwani is from Santa Clara Pueblo and resides in Utah. She was so gracious to make time when she came to visit her family. She took the time to model this dress, understanding our spiritual and ceremonial beliefs, she brought emotion to the feeling a Pueblo woman experiences when two become one...........wearing the tradition of our people as well the excitement of a white long gown. Combining both worlds as one was my hope and objective in creating this piece of art.
Kwani is a Painter, an accomplished artist whose work is quite spectacular! She was born and raised in Southeast Idaho where she developed a deep love for art since childhood. She graduated from Brigham Young University - Idaho with a BFA in Oil Painting in 2013. Her work is heavily influenced by being a member of Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico. From Plein Air, Life, Landscape, Western and Native renditions, her work is Internationally distinguished and acclaimed.
